Hello all, it has been much to long since I've last updated this lovely blog but it's the new year and you know what that means. It's time to look back in order to learn and move forward.
2016 was such crap on many levels and utterly wonderful at the same time. It was a year of new experiences and a year of tremendous losses.
Some highlights of 2016 include:
Vacations
A trip to the beach with Handsome Jack's family which involved meeting kangaroos was a blast.
Also, I took a trip to a nearby lake with my family and we had a blast.
Lastly, I spent some lovely days with my girl friends in Memphis which was so fun.
Law School
I've survived a full year of law school!! That's 3 sets of exams I've conquered (and law school exams are just killer.)
I made the Moot Court team for our school and argued like a boss at out competition. We didn't make it to nationals but we did great.
Running
I started 2016 with the goal of running 12 5k's over 12 months....but fell short.
However, the races I attended were fun.
Reading/Writing
I crammed several 'fun reads' into my breaks between semesters including some great books by some of my favorite authors including Kristen Proby, Kate Willoughby, Ashley Poston.
I did not hit any writing goals - I mean, other than the writing projects I needed for school.
There are a lot of things that I missed completely (see my 2016 Happiness Project post or my Q1 update for more details on my lofty goals for 2016). And I experienced crushing loss: the loss of my friend and the loss of my nephew.
In the end, though, it was a great year. I am thankful for all the time I've had with friends and family - every moment is such a precious gift - and look forward to more wonderful moments in the coming year. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow and challenge myself, intellectually and physically, with the rigor of law school. I truly love what I'm learning - even though I hate exams.
I hope your 2016 had more shine than tarnish and I hope you celebrated surviving another year. Never forget to celebrate. **Cheers**

Fave Reads of 2015
Every year, around this time, I like to recap my favorite reads of the year.
A quick look at my goodreads list shows a solid tie between Romance and NA books. And no wonder, I absolutely love the emotional intensity and mature heat level of NA. They are so much fun!
Here are some of my faves, in no particular order.
.......................................................................................................................
1.NA Romance:The Capital Confessions Series (three books) by Chanel Cleeton
This series is classic Chanel Cleeton - meaning it's chock full of authentic, steamy heat. I couldn’t put it down. All three books are a fun read (but the second book was my fave).
2. NA Contemp Romance: Deep Blue Eternity by Natasha Boyd.
This book was gripping and steamy. There is this scene in the rain...it's hot, hot, HOT.
3. YA Contemp/Urban Fantasy: Trust Me, I’m a Ninja by Natalie Whipple
The second book in Natalie's ninja series is aw-some! With ninja’s, high school drama, a crush between two bad ass kids? Um, yes please. I adored this story. Like a lot of Natalie’s books, this one is action packed and full of swoon worthy scenes. I definitely recommend it.
4. Adult Sports Romance: In The Zone (a hockey romance series) by Kate Willoughby.
I'd never read sports romances before my friend recommended them. I started with these hockey romances and fell in love. Kate's stories are hot and sweet. They offer the full package of longing, desire, heat, and happiness. I love these books and think you will too.
5. NA Romance:Fall With Me by Jennifer Armentrout
I adore books by Jennifer Armentrout (aka J Lynn). This book is just as steamy as the rest of her stuff and it’s adorable. I couldn’t put this book down. I believe Fall With Me is my favorite in the series. Did you read any of these books this year? What did you think?
Those are my faves this year.

2015 Year in Review - and other observations from a caffeinated introvert
This year marks the beginning of a new normal and adjusting to the newness has been tough. New levels of stress have really thrown me off balance.
December has been slower, at least. And this time of year I always like to pause and reflect on what I’ve accomplished. Mostly because no one is going to do it for you (you gotta toot your own horn). And also because it’s empowering to see what all you’ve done with the minutes, hours, and days you’ve been given.
This year has been remarkable and here’s why:
More than 51 thousand words written. Now, that's a lot less than last year. However, I did stop tracking my words after August (because my writing time was random and fleeting so I didn't count words - I more celebrated the fact that I was writing at all!). That’s good considering my law school work took a boat load of my personal time. *0.0*
76 blogs posted
100 + new Twitter followers
12000 blog views (More than double the views from last year)
32 novels read (11 more than last year)
0 writing class attended (unfortunately)
1 WIP completed *woo hoo* and one outlined
0 contests entered. Ooops. Missed that goal but you know what. Primarily because my story wasn’t contest ready this year and there was a lot of stuff to do with school.
I started law school! I did the work and I took the exams. I survived (*just barely*)! Law school is pretty flipping hard so I'm thrilled with my performance so far.
Running took a backseat as school took most of my time. I didn't even make it to the personal trainer appointments (because they conflicted with my school schedule).
But we did run more than 190 miles this year (including the DOPEY CHALLENGE! Check out my Dopey Challenge posts: 5k, 10k, Half, Full, and my Dopey Recap).
There was travel for vacations and business: St. Louis, MO, various parts of FL (including Disney World), North GA Mountains, a Caribbean Cruise AND an Alaskan Cruise!! These trips included hiking, running, tubing, swimming, and time on the beach. I even attended an awesome bike week in Panama City. I spent a lot of time with family which was my ultimate goal.
Overall, I accomplished a good deal - however, I missed some milestones and goals along the way, but the end result was success and momentum. An (not concurrently, of course)d a kick ass first semester of law school.
It’s time to celebrate our momentum and achievements. It's time to look forward to another great year. I, for one, am going to read a book, sleep, and sleep some more.
How do you plan to celebrate?

Three years a-bloggin' *fire the cupcake cannons*
It's time to celebrate three fantastic years on this blog! I can't believe it's been that long.
So, like last year (and the year before that), I’m going to celebrate with a little blog stats (in case you couldn’t tell, I love stats). So here we go:
Number of blog posts this year: 71 (that's 24 fewer posts than last year but that's okay. I'm going for quality not quantity)
Top five most popular posts this year (in order):
*note - there is a fitness theme in this year's most popular posts. After all, this was the year I ran Dopey and who does't love #runDisney?
1. DIY Rapunzel Running Costume #runDisney - 490 hits
2. My Kevin (from Up) Running Costume #runDisney – 277 hits
3. My Thoughts on Nice-guy (and girl) Sexism – 103 hits
4. #runDisney costume ideas for the men in your races – 100 hits
5. 2015 Walt Disney World Marathon Recap – 97 hits
Seeing all these race posts makes me hungry for another run.*opens calendar* *starts planning*
All in all, I’ve really enjoyed this past year on the blog. I think blogging has made me accountable and more committed to my goals. I am confident all of the work and discipline over the last year has made me a better writer.
So happy blogaversary everyone who's enjoyed this blog over the last three years. To celebrate I’ve collected hot boy gifs for your enjoyment.

2014 Year in Review - and other observations from a caffeinated introvert
This year has been amazing and crazy and stressful. So, in other words, it’s been like any other year. LOL
141,557 words written. That’s almost as much as last year’s 158,693 words and pretty darn good considering my law school prep work took a boat load of my personal time. *0.0* (I'm still in shock I did so well - check out how I did Nov, Oct, and Sep)
72 blogs posted
100 + new Twitter followers
6000 blog views
21 novels read
1 writing class attended
2 WIP’s completed *woo hoo* Granted, one was started last year. But still.
1 conference attended - see my RWA14 recap here.
0 contests entered. Ooops. Missed that goal but you know what, I’m okay with it. Primarily because my story wasn’t contest ready this year. There’s always next year.
My personal life didn't sit dormant all year so I could accomplish all those great writerly achievements. No, sir.
I took the soul-sucking LSAT prep class. Conquered the test and got accepted to law school!
My husband and I have been training for the 2015 #DopeyChallenge for months now.
We’ve run more than 265.3 miles this year.
There was travel for vacations and business: St. Louis MO, various parts of FL (4 separate times), North GA Mountains (5 separate times), KY, Jackson MS, Charleston SC, and San Antonio TX. These trips included hiking, backpacking, running, tubing, swimming, kayaking, and time on the beach. Pretty awesome if you ask me.
I even took a few rides on the back of my hubby’s bike. Either I’m getting better at being a passenger or I’m losing my voice – either way, there is less screaming now. Who knew being a passenger would require practice?
I successfully hosted my family’s Thanksgiving Extravaganza without landing anyone in the Emergency Room (go, me!).
Through it all I was able to accomplish most the writing goals I set out for myself. I missed some milestones and goals along the way, but the end result was success and momentum. And momentum in the pursuit of any passion is a many splendid thing.
It’s time to celebrate our momentum and achievements. It's time to look forward to another great year. I, for one, am going to read a book, watch some cheesy holiday rom-coms, and hang out with friends (not concurrently, of course).

Fave Reads of 2014
Every year, around this time, I like to recap my favorite reads of the year.
A quick look at my goodreads list shows a solid tie between YA and NA books. And no wonder, I love the emotional intensity of YA and the mature heat level of NA, so, yeah. Fun.
Here are some of my faves, in no particular order.
.......................................................................................................................
1.NA Romance: London Falling (book two in the International School series) by Chanel Cleeton
This series reminded me of the semester I studied abroad. It is so authentic and steamy I couldn’t put it down. It’s a fun read.
2. YA Romance: Isla and The Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
This book, what can I say. I loved it! I really, truly, loved it. It’s so sweet and adorable. My favorite in her series is Lola, but his is a close second. Oh man, did I love this book. I read it in one sitting.
3. YA Contemp: Relax, I’m a Ninja by Natalie Whipple
Ninja’s, high school drama, a crush between two bad ass, capable kids? Um, yes please. I adored this story. Like a lot of Natalie’s books, this one is action packed and full of swoon worthy scenes. I definitely recommend it.
4. NA Romance: Make it Count by Megan Erickson
The love interest in this novel is a smarty and a sweetie. The scenes are steamy and sweet and I found myself rooting for the heroine. She’s fun, sassy, and kind. This book is the total package.
5. NA Romance: Be with Me by J Lynn
I adore books by J Lynn (NA pen name of Jennifer Armentrout). This book is just as steamy as the rest of her stuff and it’s adorable. I couldn’t put this book down.
Did you read any of these books this year? What did you think?
Those are my faves this year.

2014 Mid Year Goal Review (Do I lose points for being late?)
I’m late, I’m late, for a very important goal check. Ideally, this goal check would have been completed at the end of June-early-July but those months were hectic.
This delay in checking goals I not a good thing. It’s not like I can sit back and say, ‘Well, I didn’t do my second goal check until August so I’ll just extend the rolling year period into February.’ Uh, no. This delay in checking means there are fewer days, weeks, months to complete my 2014 goals. But I’m not scared (yet) and if you're in the same boat, have no fear. This is an opportunity to pause, take stock of our progress and correct course if needed.
You may remember, back in May I did a major goal course correction. Notice I did not say failure. Course corrections are needed. And it's not necessarily the result of setting the bar too high. Sometimes life gets in the way of our plans (big shocker, right?).
So let’s check in on my progress thus far (This is a longer post, folks, with plenty of pics and gifs. So hold on and enjoy the ride):
Writerly Goals for 2014:
o Course Corrected Goal: take at least 1 writing class between Aug – Dec 2014
Done – I took a Pitch class via RWA prior to attending the conference. I have my eye on a few other classes but I need to narrow those down.
o Course Corrected Goal: Attend 1 conference.
Done – see my RWA14 recap here.
o Course Corrected Goal: enter at least 2 contests.
On track - My WIP is almost contest/query ready. I didn’t want to submit to Pitchwars if it wasn’t ready so I’m holding on for contests later in the year.
o Course Corrected Goal: blog at least once a week for 21 weeks.
On track – this is a manageable goal for me. I wanted to blog but I also wanted to spend most of my time on my WIP. This schedule seems to work for me.
o Course Corrected Goal: Write 200k words in 2014.
On track but starting to slip - I’m a little behind my total target but I’m still pushing forward. I’m happy with my word count so far. Check out my monthly recap for Aug, July, and June.
o Course Corrected Goal: Finish 2 MS’s in 2014.
D O N E!!!! – *Does happy dance* I'm thrilled to be done with my second WIP this year. And with revisionary edits planned for two other WIPs I feel like I’m going to blow this goal out of the water. (Note: I did not start both of these WIPs within this calendar year. I’m fast but I'm not that fast. But I will be one day.)
o Course Corrected Goal: Read 40 books
Slipping – this goal is tough. That is to say 40 books was going to be a reach anyway. But it's going to be even harder now that I'm behind due to my class at the beginning of the year. Not to mention I've been drafting like a race horse these last few months. But still, I want to hit this goal. I’m watching this target and hope to meet this goal but it’s a lot of reading.
Running and Fitness Goals for 2014:
· Register for the Dopey Challenge.
Done – registered!!
· Train for Dopey challenge.
On track - Races like this require A LOT of training and I want to be seriously prepared for this race. Luckily, Handsome Jack and I started training in July. We are following the training plan on the runDisney website. We’ve had a few bumps along the road (minor injuries, nagging pain, and minor surgeries) but we are on track.
· Run a Half during training for time (must be done before Oct).
Slipping – this goal is tough. There just aren’t a lot of Half’s in ATL this time of year. Most of the races I run my only goal is to finish strong. But Disney’s new corral placement system requires proof of time. Should be interesting.
· Switch to water as my primary beverage on July 1.
Done (sorta) – I was full on addicted to soda. But I’m serious about training for this race so I knew I needed to seriously reconsider my nutrition and hydration. So I ditched the diet cola and switched to Clear American flavored water. It’s fizzy, like Coke Zero (which I love) but it doesn’t have the caffeine and added sodium. Yes, it has artificial sugars. And yes, I’d be better off if I drank water. But I’m not quite ready to let go of my fizz. So I’ve switched. And I rarely relapse and drink a caffeinated diet soda. So I call this goal done –sorta.
Personal Life Goals for 2014:
· Take class to learn the skills needed to defeat the soul destroying exam scheduled for June.
Done – the class ran from Feb – June and it met three days a week. Plus, homework. Plus take home tests. Ugh. It was hard. But it was so worth it.
· Crush soul destroying exam scheduled in June.
Done – I scored almost 20 points higher than I did the last time I took the test (almost ten years ago). My scores are right where they need to be. So, yay!
· Spend more time on the motorcycle with the hubby, Handsome Jack.
On track – I’ve hitched a ride a few times now. Most memorable was probably the 4th of July. We rode down to watch the fireworks and then rode back in the dark…eeek. It was fun and terrifying. I tried to ride again and we hit a bump that tweaked my back. So once that feels better I’m sure I’ll try again. So far so good.
· Go tubing/beach/kayak/backpacking at least once each this summer.
Done – We managed to go tubing down the Chattahoochee, layout on Daytona Beach, Kayak around the lake in KY, and backpack through the north Georgia mountains. It’s been a lot of fun.
Soooooooooooooo..........
That’s where I am. Most of my goals are done or on track with only two or three that are slipping. I'm pleased with the progress on my personal goals and writing goals. I'm a little worried about the slippage I see on my running goals and my reading goals. But hey, that's what goal checks are for, right? Changing goals (or dumping them altogether) doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It’s the smart thing to do to ensure you succeed at what matters most.
How are your goals coming along this year? Have you had to make any course corrections so far?
#NeverGiveUp #NeverSurrender
This delay in checking goals I not a good thing. It’s not like I can sit back and say, ‘Well, I didn’t do my second goal check until August so I’ll just extend the rolling year period into February.’ Uh, no.
