Advice needed! First Time Thanksgiving Hostess

This year I am excited (and terrified) to be hosting my family’s Thanksgiving Extravaganza. I say ‘extravaganza’ because this will be the first time since my wedding that my entire family and my entire in-law family will be at one table.

And hosting a for-realzies, adult dinner party is a first for me. I tried hosting a Christmas dinner with my in-laws a few years back and most people went home with food poisoning. I’m not even kidding.

But puke-gate is behind me. The past is in the past (sung triumphantly in manner of Frozen’s Elsa).

This year I am determined to throw a spectacular event.

Here’s what I know so far:

There will be 13 people at dinner. Yes, THIRTEEN.

That’s actually all I know.

What advice do you have for a first time hostess?

  1. Haha! Wow! Thirteen people. @_@
Here's a bit of advice I can think of.
Plan ahead. If you're making a turkey. Make sure you leave it out to defrost and give it enough time to. I think my aunt leaves it out the previous night or something.
Also, make sure you put it in with enough time for it to cook, And also to cool a bit so you're not burning yourself while trying to cut it.
Make sure there's enough room for seating. Bare in mind that lefties should probably sit at the edges of the table so them and the righties don't hit elbows the whole time.
Potatoes take a while longer to cook into good mashing potatoes than one typically thinks. lol
If nothing else, have a good assortment of liquor so they won't remember anything :P

    1. Lol, love the point about liquor!! This is all great advice. Thanks Ellie!

  2. Do NOT attempt to cook and clean in the same day! And try and give yourself a time cushion: plan for everything to take half an hour more than what you think it will. Hope it all goes swimmingly!!

    1. Great advice Leanra. Luckily, cleaning is my least favorite thing so I will put it off as long as possible ;)

  3. Thirteen people! Wish you a great time..I'm sure you'll be great :)

    1. Thanks so much. It will be fun, I'm sure :)
